    Samuel Huntington

was in an odd sense the

First President of The United States

holding the office on the signing of the

    Articles of Confederation.

"a valuable addition to our understanding the birthpains of our nation." -William Bushnell, Small Press

    (c) 1996 George Kelsey Dreher researched Samuel Huntington, an unsung revolutionary patriot, since the 1960s and was greatly aided by a fellowship from Yale Divinity School in 1980 which led to the finished manuscript in 1986. It was not published until after his death in 1994, but "is a valuable addition to our understanding the birthpains of our nation" (Small Press). It is on sale at Independence Hall in Philadelphia and at the Samuel Huntington Museum in Scotland, Connecticut.

240 pages, 6" x 9", Table of Contents, Index, extensive Bibliography, 15 illustrations, color cover, library binding or paperback.

"Longer Than Expected signals a brilliant writer...The Discovery of Dreher as a writer is no less invigorating than the discovery of Huntington as our forgotten Founding Father. The dual legacies of these amazing men of two very different ages have literally become a single story, which proves that recognition may be delayed but greatness can never be denied." -Phil Hall, Organica, FL

"Dreher's book allows us to view the political mechanics of our young nation, as seen through the eyes and efforts of an obscure politician who contributed as much to our national heritage as did his more well known colonial contemporaries." -William Bushnell, Small Press, MI

"Longer Than Expected is the most comprehensive study to date of Samuel Huntington." -Richard Armstrong, Norwich Bulletin, CT

"The author's research is thorough, and his style is forceful, if idiosyncratic." -Taliaferro Boatwright, Historical Footnotes, Stonington, CT

"Longer Than Expected is a sometimes scholarly, sometimes poetic work about Huntington." -Claire Bissette, New London Day. CT

"We may well thank Dreher." -R. Gordon Hoxie, Chm., Center for the Study of the Presidency, NYC

    NEW EDITION:

    1999 HARDCOVER EDITION
ILLUSTRATED AND WITH COLOR PRINTED CASE:

"It was most exciting to see modern editions of Peele's work come to print. The introduction to Edward I is absolutely fascinating." -Cornelia Wallin, Williams/Watson Theatre Collection, Dartmouth College

"Together these components fashion a useful volume for a general reading audience; indeed, this text does more than any previous edition to popularize Peele's work." -W. Scott Howard, Unversity of Denver

"I did not expect to find new historical insights into Llewelyn but was interested to see how he was portrayed to an Elizabethan audience." -John Weston, Data-Wales.co.uk

George Peele (1556-1596) was evidently one of the principal writers of chronicle history plays in the movement which rose to Shakespeare's One and Two Henry IV and Henry V. His experimentation in theatrical art was precursory to the work of Shakespeare. His repertoire included such forms of literature as history, melodrama, pastoral, tragedy, folk, play and pageant. His varied interests accented a desire not to be narrowly classified and a worry of poverty. While attending Oxford, Peele launched his diverse literary career and won praise as a translator of a play by Euripedes. Here he also wrote the first of his surving works, The Tale of Troy (published 1589), a 485-line verse epitome of the Iliad.

Peele joined an assembly of fellow Oxonians living just outside London, known as the "university wits." The group of playwrights (including Lyly, Geene, Nashe, and Marlowe) were experimental with poetry in various meters. In 1587, Thomas Nashe would call him "The chief supporter of pleasance now living, the Atlas of poetry, and primum verborum artifex" and as to dexterity of wit and variety of invention one who "goeth a step beyond all that write."

Peele developed his eloquent blank, or unrhymed, verse which greatly contributed to the tone of idyllic romance that later came to characterize comedy. This is demonstrated most in the works, The Old Wives Tale (1595) and The Araygnement of Paris (1584). Consequently, his generation looked on him as a literary giant. Eight years after The Araygnement, Robert Greene considered him "no less deserving" than Marlowe and Nashe; "in some things rarer, in nothing inferior." Edward I (1593) and The Love of King David and Fair Bethsabe (1594) are only two of four dramatic works that are certainly the products of Peele's wit.

    (c) 1999 Our first edition of KING EDWARD THE FIRST was published in 1974. DAVID AND BETHSABE (SAMPLES) was published in 1980. Our new edition combines the two under one cover. George Kelsey Dreher's retroform edition prompted Cornelia Wallin of the Williams/Watson Theatre Collection at Dartmouth College to write, "It was most exciting to see modern editions of Peele's work come to print. The introduction to KING EDWARD I is absolutely fascinating."

The new edition is only available in hardcover and has 8 medieval illustrations from the Bristish Library, plus 1 each from the Public Records Office, Eton College, and the Beinecke Rare Book Collection featured in KING EDWARD I.

There are 12 illustrations in DAVID AND BETHSABE (SAMPLES) from museums around the world by the artists Raphael, Michelangelo, Salviati, Rembrandt, Chapron, Berton, Beckmann, Picasso, and Chagall.

    (c) 1995 Written in the 1950s to be performed on stage as a statement in opposition to hunger, this novella was converted to prose in the 1960s and still carries a timely message: hunger is present in the U.S. and can be addressed by professionals in the food industry in conjunction with elected officials.

Proceeds benefit Church World Service/CROP and the appendix gives statistics on world hunger and the history and services of CROP. Organizations wishing to use this book to raise money to combat hunger are encouraged to contact us for special arrangements.

    5-1/2" x 8", 72 pages, appendix, saddle stitched.

Authors Note: After I had decided to write about someone dedicated to the humane campaign against hunger, my imagination fell under the sway of stories drawn from the folklore of Baltic peoples. Those stories concern various prodigies of forestry and the hunt. Besides magnifying the strength and skill of their central figures, the stories often tell of a profound struggle with nature, with mythic adversaries, and with fate. Thus the robust and often wily protagonist might meet a tragic end.

A certain weeping-rock alongside the Daugava River, for instance, is said to be transformed from a beautiful girl who was the lover of a powerful bear-slayer. He had also succeeded in combining some of his people's clans into tribes and improving their modes of government and defense. His strength was supposed to derive from the fact that his ears were ears of a bear. Like the biblical Sampson, he suffered from an enemy who sought to take away that strength at the source -- by cutting off his ears. The two grappled and fell together into the dark waters of the river from which, it is said, he will one day rise and free his people.

So I very freely reconceived elements of that story.

George Kelsey Dreher (1919-1994) was born in Wisconsin but lived his last 30 years in Connecticut, the period that bore his major research and writing. He graduated from Dartmouth, a major in English Honors, in 1941, then earned degrees from Oberlin Graduate School of Theology and Yale Divinity School. He wrote many pieces for church periodicals. 1961-1964 he lectured in religion and philosophy at Wichita University. Following an interest in the impact of the Bible on later literature, he presented papers to small groups on Fulke Greville, Giraudoux' JUDITH and Peele's THE LOVE OF DAVID AND FAIR BETHSABE. It was the latter which led to the study of EDWARD I. He was a recognized scholar of the American Revolution and Elizabethan drama.

OBSCURE TITLES for the discriminating connoisseur of 16th century English drama and 18th century American history. Many of our customers are eggheads, but you don't have to be one to enjoy our publications. Author/editor George Kelsey Dreher wrote in a style for both scholars and laymen. Dense content written with clarity. Little known specialty subjects that are generally interesting.

MOVIES: Several of our titles would make good screenplays. The play KING EDWARD THE FIRST is the 16th century precursor to the box office hit "Braveheart". Whereas "Braveheart" pits 13th century Scottish patriot William Wallace against Longshanks, KING EDWARD THE FIRST sets the scene for "Lluellen, Rebel in Wales" in resisting their mutual foe. NOW THE DOG IS QUIET was originally written for the stage to bring attention to the struggle against hunger and was later converted to prose. Samuel Huntington, President of Congress LONGER THAN EXPECTED carries a novel twist to American history, depicting Huntington as the first president of The United States in Congress Assembled.
